Holiday Hints: Homemade Gifts

This month instead of raves, I decided to do weekly holiday hints. This week I wanted to give some ideas on homemade gifts. This year I know a lot of people are trying to make the most of Christmas with a little less moolah, so I thought I would give some gift ideas that I have found in magazines and online over the years.

A great gift is a basket of homemade goodies wrapped up in pretty packages with bows and tags with instructions if necessary.
Some great ones include:
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix with Homemade Marshmellows, a whisk and two mugs that can be found at discount stores like the Dollar Tree.
A Baking Basket with a container of flour, a spatula, homemade cookie mix & cookie cutters
A basket with a collection of homemade spice mixtures, barbecue rubs, taco mix, cajun seasonings, ranch mix, etc. Include a spatula and oven mit.

You could make a nice basket of homemade bath products: salt scrub, sugar scrub, and lip balm found at Martha Stewart. You can find all the how-to details here. Photos courtesy of marthastewart.com.

I also love these hats and mittens that are monogrammed and look super easy to make, found again at Martha Stewart. Photo courtesy of marthastewart.com.

I made Adam this blanket the first year we are dating. It’s super easy and no sweat to customize to your fan’s favorite team. You just take two large pieces of fleece material (probably about 2 or three yards squared) and cut about two inch strips all the way around each side of each piece of fleece. Then you place one piece of fleece directly on top of the other and tie the strips together. That’s it! You’re done in a flash.
My friend Lauren made us this awesome gift for our wedding. She took the lyrics to “our song” and wrote them on a mat and put it in a frame.
Another great idea is to give the gift of time. Make a certificate for a night of babysitting, or a movie night in at your house, etc.
One year for my Birthday my friend Tara gave me a collage of pictures of all of our friends that was so special. Or you could also make your own photo board as seen in the second picture below. I didn’t make that one, but you could easily do it with fabric and ribbon.

Tara also made me a compilation CD of some of her favorite songs which was a great opportunity for me to experience some new music.
I know this was a bit long, but I hope it was helpful and if you have any ideas homemade gift ideas please leave a comment, I’d love to hear it!
